How to choose a free planning poker tool
A planning poker guide from EstimateIt. Back to EstimateIt
There are plenty of free planning poker tools, and most of them run a basic round well. The differences are in the limits of the free plan, what you have to sign up for, and what happens to your data. Here is what to check, with our own answers for EstimateIt.
What to check
- Does everyone need an account? Some tools need every voter to sign up, which slows down the first session and puts off guests from other teams.
- How many people and items does the free plan allow? Many free plans cap the number of voters, the number of items per game or how long history is kept. Check the limits against your largest session, not your smallest.
- Can you estimate the way your team works? Look for the cards you use (numbers, T-shirt sizes or both) and whether testers can be counted properly.
- Does it connect to your backlog? Some tools read and write Jira, Azure DevOps or GitHub issues directly, usually on a paid plan. If you only need the links and a summary to paste back, a simpler tool is fine.
- What does it do with your data? Check for advertising and tracking, where the data is kept, and when rooms are deleted.
- Is it accessible? Everyone in the session should be able to vote with a keyboard, a screen reader or a phone.
